Reviews

The EMOVE Cruiser has been one of the most popular and highest-rated electric scooters since it first arrived on the scene in 2019. With its unrivaled range capabilities and quality ride performance at an affordable price point, the Cruiser set a high standard that few other single-motor e-scooters have managed to match.

Now for 2023, the EMOVE Cruiser is back and better than ever with a major upgrade – introducing the EMOVE Cruiser S. I recently got my hands on the latest model to thoroughly test and review all of the improvements. Keep reading for my complete thoughts or use the table of contents below to jump ahead:

Overview of Changes & Upgrades

At first glance, the 2023 EMOVE Cruiser S looks nearly identical to previous versions. The overall scooter design and surfboard-inspired deck haven’t changed since they still work great as is.

But when you look closer and go for a ride, the improvements become apparent. Here’s an overview of the key upgrades over older EMOVE Cruiser models:

  • More Powerful 1600W Motor
  • Faster Acceleration & Hill Climbing
  • Higher 31+ MPH Top Speed
  • Lighter Weight – Dropped 3+ Pounds
  • Sinewave Controller for Smoother Riding
  • Enhanced Regenerative Braking
  • Improved Throttle Responsiveness
  • New Easy-Access Plug Connections
  • Same Affordable Price Point

Despite better performance in almost every way, the 2023 Cruiser S manages to retain essentially the same $1,299 price tag. So you get increased speed, acceleration and efficiency without the increased cost. Pretty great value if you ask me!

Ride Quality & Comfort

Ride comfort has always been a strength of the EMOVE Cruiser. It strikes a nice balance between stability and maneuverability with its long deck paired with 10” pneumatic tubeless tires. The wider tires and front/rear suspension soak up imperfections in the road for a smooth ride.

The new sine wave motor controller takes the Cruiser S comfort to another level. Acceleration is smoother and more consistent compared to the somewhat “jerky” feel of cheaper controllers. Throttle response feels natural with no delay. And the motor noise is nearly silent even when accelerating hard uphill.

During my test rides I found myself carving back and forth enjoying the Cruiser’s crisp handling responsiveness. At high speeds it feels planted and stable thanks to the long wheelbase. Slow speed turning capability could be slightly better but is quite good for a long board e-scooter.

In terms of ergonomics, the Cruiser S now comes standard with an upgraded thumb throttle. But you can still choose the old trigger throttle or other options if you prefer. I’m a fan of the thumb throttle for improved control and less hand fatigue.

The wide, cushioned deck offers plenty of leg room in a choice of standing or sitting positions. I could comfortably ride for 30-60+ minutes without leg strain thanks to the spacious platform. Add the optional seat for armchair-style cruising that almost feels like riding a moped.

Overall the latest EMOVE Cruiser takes what was already one of the smoothest and most comfortable electric scooters on the market and makes subtle but noticeable improvements.

Customization Options

One advantage of the Cruiser compared to highly integrated scooters is the wider range of aftermarket customizations. The team at Voro Motors (EMOVE’s USA-based distributor) offers more official accessories than any other scooter brand I’m aware of.

Some of the most popular EMOVE accessories include:

  • Snap-On Rear Seat with Suspension
  • Easy-Install Phone Holder/Mount
  • Additional LED Light Strips for Visibility
  • ABS Protective Body Kit Components
  • Aluminum Rear Grab Handle for Standing
  • Removable Storage Trunk Under Deck

And while the stock configuration works great out of the box, you can fully customize your Cruiser S. Choose from 4 different throttle options (thumb, trigger, twist, paddle). Upgrade the stem, tires, grips, lights, and more. Top speed governors are available to restrict max speed if desired.

I’m especially a fan of the smartly-designed rear seat that transforms the scooter from recreational ride to electric moped. It installs in seconds without tools for armchair-style cruising comfort. Add the rear grab handle for extra security when aggressively accelerating in the standing position. Check out this video guide showing some of my favorite Cruiser mods in action.

Controls & Components

The control layout remains simple and intuitive on the Cruiser S. All the critical functions are within easy thumb reach.

Your left thumb controls:

  • LED Headlight On/Off
  • High/Low Beam Selector

While your right thumb takes care of:

  • Electric Throttle
  • Electric Brake
  • Horn Button

Headlight brightness is impressive and features a 15° vertical adjustment range. I would prefer an added flashlight mode with lower brightness for improved visibility without blinding oncoming traffic at night.

Also on the right side are the turn signal controls. A nice safety addition more common on electric mopeds than scooters. However, they are currently only installed on the rear – having front LED turn signals would improve visibility and safety.

Moving further inward, a metal button lets you toggle the underside LED deck lights. They help you stand out at night but also aid with monitoring battery level based on color.

Other nicely integrated components include the minimalist digital display, rear tail light/brake light combo, large mechanical disc brakes, folding mechanism, and kickstand. Everything works as expected with no flimsy parts or potential failure points identified even after repeated abuse testing.

Build Quality & Hardware

The EMOVE Cruiser lineup has always scored highly for build quality and longevity. Rather than chasing the latest trends or flashy features, it focused on practicality and daily usability. The type of scooter that will still be reliably getting riders from point A to B years down the road.

Here’s why I think the Cruiser S is built to last:

  • LG Battery Cells – Proven reliability over thousands of cycles
  • Huge 782 Wh Battery Size – 1/3 as many charge cycles needed
  • Aircraft-Grade Aluminum Alloy Frame – Corrosion-resistant
  • IPX54 Water Resistance Rating – Handles splashes no problem
  • Reinforced Critical Stress Points – No looseness after hard riding
  • Easy Maintenance Access – Simple plug-in connections for repairs
  • 6 Month Comprehensive Warranty – Industry leading

With proper basic maintenance like checking/tightening fasteners and correct battery storage procedures, there’s no reason the Cruiser S couldn’t still be rolling along 5 years and 15,000+ miles in the future. That kind of lifespan potential is almost unheard of in the scooter world.

Little touches also impressed me like the engraved EMOVE logo and model name on the alloy sections along with neatly run cables secured by frame clips rather than messy zip ties dangling everywhere. Attention to detail is clearly important here.

Colors & Portability

One new enhancement for 2023 is additional color options. The Cruiser S is currently offered in 6 total color schemes:

I’m partial to the bright orange that really makes it stand out. But the blue, black, and white choices all coordinate nicely if you want something more subtle. At 65 lbs, the Cruiser S is still relatively portable considering the size. The folding stem helps reduce height. Be prepared to put some muscle into lifting it in/out of a car trunk though!

Performance Testing Results

We put the 2023 EMOVE Cruiser S through extensive testing in a wide range of real-world conditions and riding scenarios. Our detailed performance benchmarks allow direct comparison to competitors to see how it stacks up.

Here are some test highlight numbers for those interested in the hard data:

  • Top Speed: 31.7 MPH
  • Range: 43.6 Miles
  • Acceleration (0-30 MPH): 5 Seconds
  • Hill Climb Speed: 28 MPH
  • Braking Distance (15 MPH): 10 Feet

The Cruiser S is an unusually quick and powerful single motor scooter. It can more than hold its own against much pricier dual motor alternatives for a fraction of the cost. No exaggeration – it absolutely dominates other scooters in terms of maximum range capabilities as well.

So if you prioritize a practical commuter that can comfortably cruise at 30+ MPH speeds all day without range anxiety, the Cruiser S is pretty much unrivaled. The extreme long distance range does come with a weight penalty, but compared to alternatives with similar battery capacities, EMOVE’s smart engineering keeps it surprisingly lightweight.

Comparison to Top Alternatives

While the Cruiser S may sound almost too good to be true so far, I always aim to provide balanced perspectives. So let’s discuss a few potential downsides depending on your priorities and needs. I’ll also highlight how some competitors like the Fluid Vista, Dualtron Mini, and others might be better options for certain riders.

Fluid Vista – Solid Tire Alternative

For those wanting extreme puncture protection without ever dealing with flats, the Fluid Vista Horizon packs impressive speed and acceleration into an affordable package with air-free solid tires. It handles similarly to the Cruiser S but weighs 7 lbs more.

Downsides are reduced shock absorption leading to a harsher ride and much lower 17 mile maximum range. Still an excellent and very modern-styled option for shorter urban commutes under 10 miles where the smoothness and high mileage capabilities of the Cruiser S matter less.

Dualtron/Speedway Mini – More Thrilling Performance

I have to mention the Dualtron/Speedway Mini lineup which features a gorgeous exotic sci-fi style look combined with Ferrari-like speed and acceleration. We’re talking 0-30 MPH in under 3 seconds quick! No front brake is a concern but the performanceexcitement factor is undeniable.

Just keep in mind that with a $300-$800 higher price tag and no included seat, the Mini models compromise practicality. Ultra compact portability when folded comes at the cost of a much smaller standing platform/deck area significantly impacting comfort. Choose this over the Cruiser S if thrill-seeking performance eclipses practicality.

Budget Alternatives

Saving money better suits some riders’ needs. Brands like Gotrax, Hiboy, and Xiaomi offer models from $250-$800 matching around half the Cruiser S max speed and range capabilities. Just expect to make more compromises in build quality, power, comfort and longevity.

I wouldn’t expect a sub-$500 scooter to last more than 1-3 years with regular use. The EMOVE Cruiser should still be going strong at 5+ years. So factor in total lifespan costs and whether buying two cheaper scooters is ultimately more expensive than one very reliable vehicle.

The Verdict: Is the Cruiser S Worth Upgrading To?

The revamped EMOVE Cruiser S receives my strong recommendation as one of the best all-around electric scooters currently available. It artfully balances performance, comfort, customization potential, and value tied together with outstanding build quality. Beginners enjoy the approachable learning curve while experts appreciate the brisk acceleration and high end speed. Tall, short, heavy or lightweight riders can all find a enjoyable configuration that fits their needs.

If you already own an older generation Cruiser, this refresh still brings meaningful improvements that hardcore riders will appreciate. But upgrading likely isn’t essential unless the new colorways are just irresistable!

For new riders seeking the best of the best range, comfort and practicality without breaking the bank, the 2023 EMOVE Cruiser S should rank at the very top of shopping lists. Reliable enough for daily commuting yet playful enough for weekend joyriding – it’s one of the most versatile electric scooters money can buy.
